MOTHER'S DAY OUT PROGRAM

INTRODUCTION

The Mother's Day Out Program at Christ the King Lutheran Church began in 1991.  It grew as a result of the Church's interest in reaching out in ministry to the community as well as in response to the needs and demands of our own congregation.  Its mission is to provide a Christian based loving program for young children.

Our program provides a nurturing, caring place where children can play together and learn how to be kind and caring with each other.  We model Christian behavior for them and hope they will experience here values and ethics that are similar to those stressed at home.

We operate as a nonprofit organization under the Learning Ministries umbrella of Christ the King Lutheran Church.  We are a financially self-supporting ministry.  There is a Mother's Day Out Board which determines policy and makes decisions.  The Board is comprised of the Pastor, the Treasurer, the Learning Ministries representative from the Church Council, the Mother's Day Out Director and an at-large member of the congregation of Christ the King.

All children are welcome in our program.  We do not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, color , national origin, denomination or religious affiliation.  We do not proselytize; but we do intentionally give witness to our Christ-centered faith and teachings.

OBJECTIVES

A.   To provide a safe environment which supports the physical, social, emotional, intellectual and spiritual development of each child.

B.   To help each child learn and experience God's love through relationships with caring adults and other children who provide them with acceptance and affection.

C.   To help each child develop a positive sense of self, a sense of trust and a concern for others.

D.   To help each child feel secure and comfortable in a Christian setting away from home.

E.   Recognize the role of play in the healthy development of each child.

F.   To assist parents and families with young children grow in their relationships with each other, with other families and in their faith.

THE PROGRAM

GENERAL

The program is designed to meet both the needs of children who are having a first experience away from home as well as children who have had other group experiences.  The daily schedule is somewhat structured since predictability in routine tends to increase a child's sense of security in a new situation.  Because we believe a child learns best through play, many opportunities for play are provided.

DAILY PROGRAM STRUCTURE

A daily program is planned for each age group and is presented in a semi-structured format.  It includes learning centers and activities such as:

1.   Free play and group time

2.   Stories, Felt Board Stories, Library Time

3.   Arts and crafts (painting, clay, collage, crayons, scissors, paste, etc.)

4.   Music (finger plays, singing, instruments, tapes & CD's, creative movement)

5.   Manipulative materials and creative materials for learning and teaching (blocks, puzzles, games, educational materials, toys, etc.)

6.   Outdoor & Indoor play (playground, climbing gym, sand water table, circle cycle, basketball hoop, play houses and other equipment for large muscle development and imaginative play.)
