Pastor Paul’s Pen

Rev. Paul F. Gysan

In the month of June I look forward to gathering with you following the late service on June 1st for our Congregational Meeting.  It’s an exciting time when we hear the report of the Nominating Committee chaired by Marian Zimmerman!  It’s an exciting time when we elect council members who will assume the office to which they were elected, and seek to discharge their duties faithfully, to the glory of God and in service to God’s church!  Not only do we elect people to serve but we give thanks for those who have completed their terms of office!  We’ll also hear about our progress in our “Silver To Gold” campaign, and hear about our financial status.  We dare not miss the stories of how we continue to “Connect the World with God’s Grace” touching many people’s lives!

On Sunday, June 8th, we will recognize our HS graduates at the 11:00am service.  Their names are listed in this newsletter.  Each of them will receive a book entitled HINDSIGHT.  In this book there are 60 devotions from young adults who have been where these youth are headed.  They’ve seen God at work in their lives, and they want to share God’s awesome power!

Speaking of “awesome power” don’t miss the 11:00am service on June 15th.  It happens to be “Father’s Day” and this service led by our Sunday School will focus on the theme “Fathers.”  Don’t miss this service!  It’s always an inspiring time to listen to the witness of our youth, and give thanks to God for our SS Staff!

Sunday, June 22nd, the 11:00am worship service will be outdoors at Lake Fairfax.  Bring chairs, blankets, a dish to share - meat and beverages will be provided.  During the service we also will welcome new members into the fellowship.

Sunday, June 29th, at both services we will have the installation of the 2008-2009 Congregational Council.  Don’t miss this opportunity to gather in prayer and support these servants!

I thank God for all seasons of the year but summertime is my favorite.  As nature is growing and flourishing around me, I enjoy the bounty of seeds that I’ve planted.  I didn’t create the seed, the soil, the sun, the rain - God did!  Summertime is a time of great thanksgiving!

While you are traveling, pick up a bulletin and bring it back as Pastor Scott suggests in his article.  When you are home, if you cannot attend a Sunday service, join us Saturday evening at 6:00pm.

Also, VBS registration forms are available.  This year we are working with St. Francis Episcopal Church.  They are hosting this July 28-August 1. We need teachers and helpers.  We have a great theme this year, “God’s Big Backyard” that talks about taking the love of God to other “backyards.”  I hope to see you there!

Also, Jane Cooper is offering an exciting Class during the summer at 9:45am on Sunday dealing with music.  Be sure to read her article in the newsletter.  I think it’s going to be an excellent course!

                                                                                                   WWW?!?

With June here, summer is beginning to unfold, and before we know it, summer will be in full swing.  Within days of you getting this newsletter, kids will be out of school and families all across our region and country will be headed out for some rest and relaxation on some well-needed vacations.  When you are vacation, Where Will you Worship?

A good friend of mine in college was a devout Roman Catholic.  He used to tell stories about when he was growing up as a youth how his family worshipped on vacation.  When they would arrive at their destination on a Saturday evening…be it a motel in the middle of no-where, or to their vacation destination…the first thing his father would do, even before unpacking the car!, was to look in the phone book for the nearest Catholic Church.  First thing Sunday morning, they would go to worship.  Although my friend wishes that at least on vacation he could have slept in on a Sunday morning, he did have stories to tell about all the different places he had worshipped.  In hindsight, he thanked his parents for not taking a vacation from worship while on vacation.

So how many of us think about worship while we vacation?  It’s very tempting to take a vacation from church and worship while we take our vacations.  If we do that, I think we miss out not only on feeding our faith with God’s Word and Sacrament, but on the possibility of experiencing God in a new way in a new place.

So WWW?  Where Will you Worship this summer?  In the middle of June, we’re going to put two maps up on the worship ministries board down the main hallways, along with a box of push pins.  One map will be of the United States and the other a map of the world.  Wherever your travels lead you this summer, nourish your faith by going to worship.  Bring a bulletin back from where you worshipped, and post it up along the board, as well as taking a push pin and marking the spot where you worshipped.

This summer Jen, Stephen, and I will be worshipping in Colorado where I will be baptizing my niece and nephew.  The next week-end, we will be worshipping in Ashern, Manitoba, Canada (about 100km north of Winnipeg), with the congregation where my family has worshipped for over 100 years.

So WWW?  Where Will you Worship?  I look forward to finding out!

President’s Commentary

Allen Wild

Chances are by the time you are reading this, the June 1st Congregational Meeting would have happened and you will have elected the six new Council Members.  The June 16th Council Meeting will be the “transition meeting” between the 2007-2008 council and the 2009-2009 council.  Council officer positions and ministry chairs will be announced in the July King’s Herald.

Having completed my three-year term on council this will be my last “Commentary” so I wish to use this opportunity to thank all members for their support this past year.  I owe a great deal of gratitude to the members who served on the 2007-2008 council.  While the quantity of members was less, clearly their dedication and service was of the highest quality.  We also want to thank again the non-council individuals who served as committee chairs and all the members who worked on the ministry teams.  Members leaving the council the end of June and completing three-year terms are Louise Babirak, Bob Hummel and Al Wild.  Gil Miller will also be leaving after filling the third year of another member’s term.  There were also two vacant positions so six members will be elected on June 1st.

As a congregation you have been very generous with your contributions toward the Silver to Gold campaign.  Pastor Scott reported in his May 11th sermon that at the end of our S2G first year, $340,000 has been contributed.  That’s 43% of the three year pledged amount.  Seven years have already been shaved off the mortgage, saving over $550,000 in interest.  Please see the council bulletin board in the narthex for more details.

We are, however, facing a significant challenge with regard to the operating budget you approved last January.  You should recall it contained a $45,000 leap of faith line item.  That means the projected offerings, based on 2008 pledges, were short of the projected 2008 expenses even though they only reflected very small growth factor to cover inflation.  Your council members have managed to minimize expenses but you cannot ask your pastors, the staff and the council to operate your church indefinitely with a continued shortfall in offerings.  I pray that you will please maintain your pledges and offerings during the upcoming summer months and, if at all possible, help us make our “leap of faith” a reality.

Dear Christ the King Lutheran Church and Council,

Many blessings and peace be with you. It has been a joy being a part of CTK, but due to unfortunate circumstances relating to Jon’s education I am announcing my resignation as Youth and Family Minister.  I do this with a heavy heart. My last day will be Sunday, July 27th.

There is still vital ministry to be done before the time I leave such as; a girl’s retreat and summer trips. I want to extend my gratefulness for this call in my life.  I have enjoyed working with the youth here as well as the families. I fully appreciate the work of the staff, Youth and Family Team, Learning Team, and Council.  Over the next three months, I hope to continue to build up the youth as they explore their faith as well as the importance of Youth and Family Ministry within the congregation.

In Christ,

Kara Haug

Youth and Family Minister

Above is the letter that I gave to council about three weeks ago.  I am very sad to have had to give this letter and leave CTK.  Since the news has been getting out I am very grateful for the love and support I have been receiving.  I am still working hard to prepare for the high school trip to Heifer International ranch in Arkansas and for the upcoming girl’s retreat.  I value this time I have left with the youth and their families.  July I will spend time in the next newsletter writing my farewell as well as expressing my love.

A bird nest in the fountain?  Donna Kiffe this spring wanted to get the fountain in the “Meditation Garden” flowing again, after the long cold winter.  To her amazement, the reality company had rented it out to birds.  A bird’s nest filled with eggs had “rented” the fountain!  Before it’s used again as a fountain it will have been a labor and delivery room and a nursery for the babies.  Meditate upon that!…Our prayers are with Barbara Kuhler and family at the death of Warren on April 22. The funeral service was held at St. Luke Lutheran Church, Ocean Isle Beach, NC.  These members go back to the time this church met in the Grange, and were a blessing to this church along with their three children…Katherine Miller-Cvilikas was in the musical, “Kiss Me Kate” at Herndon.  She played various roles: Stage hand, Bianca Quartet, Dancer, Ensemble…Ryan Anderson accompanied on the piano the play “Once Upon A Mattress” at Dominion High School…Ryan McKinney a science teacher at Langley School helped launch a “green” initiative.  With the help of a California-based company called One Bat at a Time, Langley’s students, parents, and teachers designed and produced a reusable grocery bag that helps decrease the number of plastic bags the school community uses.  Ryan and his 6th grade science students led the effort calculating that the Langley community uses more than 700,000 plastic bags each year.  Ryan says, “the best way to help ensure a healthy and sustainable environment for our students is to make small changes in our everyday actions”…Susanna Finger got a 4.0 in her second semester of Grad School at VT; she is staying in Blacksburg this summer working as an editor and writer at the Tech newspaper and doing research for her thesis (6 hrs. credit, enabling her to probably graduate next Dec.)…Thanks to Katherine Cantrall for conducting a Brownie Girl Scout “Bridge to Jr. Girl Scout Award” workshop.  She planned and had the girls plant two much needed bushes in front of the Christian Life Center…

Church Picnic

Mark Your Calendar!

Be sure to mark your calendars now for the annual church picnic - Sunday, June 22nd, at Area “D” in Lake Fairfax Park in Reston, following the 11:00am outdoor worship service held in the same location.  We will be welcoming new members into the fellowship at this service as well.  Please bring your chairs/blankets, and a side dish or dessert to share.  In an effort to be environmentally friendly, we ask that you consider bringing your own cup or water bottle, or use the recycling receptacle provided.  Chicken and beverages will be provided!

Summer Music Class

I have often heard people say, “I would love to sing in the choir, but I can’t read music.”  So, I would like to give you the opportunity to learn.  I am considering offering a class in basic Music Theory this summer at 9:45am each Sunday, starting June 22nd.

The class would cover note duration, time signatures, melodic & harmonic intervals, sight singing, ear training, and hands-on experience with the language of music.  There will be handouts with exercises to be written in class and taken home for review.  There will not be any required reading or homework assigned.  The class will be open to adults and kids from 4th grade up and a materials fee of $10 per student will apply.

This class is also an excellent review for those people who already participate in a vocal or instrumental choir, or someone who used to play an instrument and is considering taking it up again.  Learning something new is living life to the fullest!  Come, learn the language of music!  Contact:  Jane Cooper, 703-759-3919.

Women’s Class

The Learning Committee is considering putting together a class for the ladies of CTK church beginning in September.  The class would be offered from 9:45 to 10:45 between the two Sunday services and would offer current topics for discussion and, perhaps, a book to be discussed.  We would like to know how many women would be interested in a class such as this and what you might like to hear discussed.  Could you send your thoughts to me and provide some input?  My contact information is Louise.Babirak@qwest.com.  This is an excellent opportunity to join in fellowship with your sisters in Christ!

Vacation Bible School – July 28-August 1

Set aside these the week of July 28-August 1 for Vacation Bible School.  This year we will meet at St. Francis.  Over the years we rotate between St. Francis and Christ the King.  It’s a joy to work with other brothers and sisters in Christ, meet new friends, and pool our talents and gifts!

Come and join Alex and Cooper, the loyal dog, along with their friends Stan and Nick, the mischievous squirrel.  Our theme is “God’s Big Backyard.” Get ready for an outdoor adventure that starts in your own backyard and gets bigger each day as kids take the love of Jesus into their neighborhoods and communities.

In God’s Big Backyard, kids will participate in the large-group excitement of Backyard Bash, experience God’s Word a Backyard Bible Club, meet real-life servants at Community Center, plus explore and create through fun-filled crafts, snacks, and games.

Here’s what kids will learn each day: Serve Family (Day 1), Serve Friends (Day 2), Serve Neighbors (Day 3), Serve Community (Day 4), Serve Community (Day 5).

Hardcopy registration forms can be obtained in the narthex of our church, or visit St. Francis’ website www.stfrancisgreatfalls.org by clicking “Information for Church Members” located on the left side of the home page.  Please place the hardcopy forms in the box in the narthex or return them to St. Francis Episcopal Church, 9220 Georgetown Pike, GF. 22066.

Volunteers are need to help make this a wonderful experience for lots of eager children. Parents, grandparents, and youth are among the many we invite to help in leading and supporting the program for children, from pre-school age through elementary school.

For more information and to volunteer, please contact Lynn Fallon at 703-757-0282, or via e-mail at christianed@stfrancisgreatfalls.org.

Greetings from Mother’s Day Out!

This had been a very exciting month on many levels.  The children have been patiently watching our caterpillars.  They all emerged from their cocoons as beautiful butterflies.  It was fun watching them flit around in the tent.  After about a week or so, we took them outside and watched them take off for new adventures.  The children cheered as each one of them found their way out of the tent.

We celebrated the achievements of our Pre-K classes with a graduation program and celebratory tea on May 14th.  The 21 graduates shared some special songs with an audience of family and friends.  We all went to Fellowship Hall to have some sweet treats, watch a slideshow of events throughout the year and see pictures of the children when they were younger.

The school year ended with some extra special fun.  We had “Backward Bizarro” days, the children could wear their craziest mismatched outfits, “Wacky Wednesday”, the children could sport wacky hats or crazy hair and Beach Days, where we had some outdoor water fun!

There are still a few openings available in several of our classes this fall – especially in the Teddy Bear classes (for those children who are 2 ½ by September).  Please stop by for a facility tour or contact Karen Anderson at 703/759-6935 or mothersdayout@verizon.net for more information.

I am pleased announce that Jen McAnally’s role in the program will be changing for the fall.  She will be serving as our Assistant Director and Pre-K Coordinator.  Jen will be working on Mondays and Tuesdays.  I will be working Wednesday through Friday.  We are excited about this change as it allows us to continue working in a place that we both love and gives us some needed time to focus on our families.

A heart felt “thank you” goes out to the CTK congregation for the support you’ve shown to the program this year.  We’ve had a great year – that couldn’t happen without your help!  May you have a terrific summer!

Peace, Karen Anderson, Director

Hunter Woods Fellowship House Spring Fling

On Sunday, April 27th, about 40 members of CTK, adults and children met at the Hunter Woods Fellowship House in Reston for a “Spring Fling” with the senior residents.  The residents enjoyed entertainment provided by many talented CTK members.  Refreshments were served, followed by Bingo, which was enjoyed by all.  Thanks to Jane Cooper who coordinated the talent, and to Karen Magley and the chimers as well as to all those who performed.  We also thank everyone who contributed food and treats – the residents really loved the food!  A special thanks to Kim Kennedy and Kathi Evans for their help with the refreshments!

NOVACO Update

Our NOVACO mom is doing well.  She is starting to take ESOL classes.  Her daughter celebrated her 2nd Birthday this month.  She is in need of a car.  We are also seeking a volunteer to give her driving lessons.  The month of July will be CTK’s next month for primary sponsorship duties for our NOVACO family.  Watch the Sunday bulletins for updates and needs.

Life Skills Dinner – Christ The King, under the leadership of Susan Boruff, coordinated and served the Life Skills Dinner to NOVACO clients and counselors on Monday May 12th.  Thank you to those who contributed food – Erica Smith, Lisa Brown, Bobbie Rish, Susan Boruff, and Sheryl McEwan and to those who helped set up and serve - including Katherine Boruff, Sheryl McEwan, and Owen, Taylor & Tracey Shenk.  Our next Life Skills Dinner will be held in September.

Professional Clothing Drive

Thank you to all who have contributed clothing for the Professional Clothing Drive.  The rack in the narthex is really filling up!  The drive will continue until May 25th and then the clothing will be delivered to Bread for the City – an organization in Washington DC that provides those in need with comprehensive services including clothing for clients with new jobs or job interviews.  If you would like to help deliver the clothing to the District during the week of May 25th – 30th please contact Tracey Shenk – (703) 438-8989.

Rebuilding Together

For the fifth year in a row, the Service Committee is pleased to announce the successful completion of a Rebuilding Together project.   All who participated agree that Rebuilding Together is a wonderful way to share time and talents.  This year the project was a townhouse in Reston.  CTK volunteers repaired and repainted the kitchen cabinets, replaced two light fixtures, repaired the front door jam, repaired a garden gate, painted most of the interior walls and painted the front exterior walls.

RPJ Housing gets high marks again this year for organizing our bulk purchase of paint and supplies, establishing credit accounts at Lowe’s and Home Depot, arranging for the return of unused materials and of course for screening home owners and assigning work sites.  The combination of RPJ Housing’s organizational skills and the talents of CTK volunteers really make a difference in the lives of our home owners, especially when one considers that work is completed in just 1 day.  We look forward to seeing everyone next year.  The Rebuilding Together work day is always the last weekend of April.

Thank you to all the CTK members who contributed to this year’s project.  The list of volunteers includes the following;  Shelley, Mark, Evan and Eric Wasser, Andy Sweet, Art Evans, Shane and Grace McKinley, Charles Schwab, Pastor Paul and LaVonne, Tom Cooper, Brett McMillen, Sarah Vanell, Carlton Ruthling, Tim and Kathy Zimmerman, Scott, Craig and Brett Wainner.

Pedaling to End Poverty Housing

Hi, my name is Kristin Prishivalko and I am currently a teacher at MDO.  This summer I will be taking a break from teaching to participate in a cross-country fundraising bike trip to benefit affordable housing efforts.

Starting June 11th, I will be biking from Jacksonville, FL to San Francisco, CA with 30 other young adults.  The group I’m going with, Bike and Build, is an independent nonprofit organization whose events direct funds, volunteers, and community and media attention to affordable housing efforts.  The trip takes over two months and we will be stopping along the way to meet with local residents, give presentations about housing issues, and build affordable homes with local housing groups, like Habitat for Humanity.

I have already spent some time working with Habitat for Humanity.  Last year I served for ten months in AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps, a team based national service organization.  While in AmeriCorps*NCCC, three quarters of my service was with Habitat for Humanity in the Gulf Coast.  By working alongside community members who told me how their houses were destroyed by the hurricanes, I learned a lot about the desperate need for decent affordable housing.  I was touched by the personal stories of those who benefited from Habitat for Humanity and saw first hand how this organization brings communities together.  This experience also made me realize that a group of committed and hopeful young adults can truly make a difference in the world.

I look forward to being a part of Bike and Build this summer, an organization that acts as a catalyst to build homes, foster the spirit of service, and empower young adults.  In order to participate though, I have to raise 4,000 dollars.

If anyone would like to support my efforts, donations can be made by going to www.bikeandbuild.org and selecting Kristin Prishivalko in the **Select a rider (or general donation)** box.

I really appreciate anything you can offer to help me reach my goal.  If you would like to contact me personally, you can email me at kcp5a@virginia.edu.  Please keep me and my fellow riders in your prayers.  Thank you and I hope you all have a wonderful summer.
