The Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany
February 7
Bulletin Highlights
Welcome to
Our Epiphany Worship
If you are visiting
with us, we welcome you warmly and hope you return soon. We ask that
all - visitors and members alike – fill out a Response Sheet and place
it in the offering plate. If you are looking for a church home and
would like more information about Christ the King Lutheran Church, check
the appropriate box on this insert and we will be in touch with you!
The glory of God is
often revealed when and where it is least expected. God uses our lips
to declare that glory, inexperienced and hesitant though they may be.
The Scriptures for the fifth Sunday after Epiphany highlight unlikely
instruments and circumstances appointed to reveal the glory of the Lord.
“Who will go for us?” queries the voice of the Lord. Responding to the
call of God: a man of unclean lips, a former persecutor of the church of
God, and three fishermen who couldn’t catch a thing. More surprising
still, perhaps, is the fact that we are also called.
All who seek God and
a deeper life in Christ are welcome to receive Holy Communion. Those
who have not received instruction are invited to come forward for a
blessing. For distribution, we use intinction, where the wafer is
touched lightly to the wine before consuming. The 1st chalice is wine,
the 2nd chalice is unfermented grape juice. If you have a wheat
allergy, gluten-free wafers are available at the communion station on
the pulpit side.
When
Disaster Strikes
Our thoughts and
prayers continue to be drawn to the earthquake disaster in Haiti. We
have been channeling funds received by Christ the King is two
directions: 1) our own church body, the ELCA, through its DISASTER
RESPONSE effort; 2) the Hopital Sacre Coeur in Haiti that CTK has
supported in the past. Gifts to either or both of these may be made
through checks made out to Christ the King Lutheran Church and earmarked
with your particular wishes. New details about the hospital efforts of
Hopital Sacre Coeur (Crudem) are posted on the bulletin board in the
Narthex. You will be heartened by the wonderfully effective response
they have made during this crisis.

Celebrating
100 Years of Boy Scouting in America
The Boy Scouts of America is one of the
nation's largest and most prominent youth development organizations,
with more than four million youth in its ranks today. It provides a
program for young people that builds character, trains them in the
responsibilities of participating citizenship, and develops personal
fitness. Today at Christ the King Church we are celebrating one hundred
years of scouting as boy scouts who are also members of our church help
us with the 11:00am service. Our church supports local scout groups and
shares the BSA belief that helping youth is a key to building a more
conscientious, responsible, and productive society.
Scouting came to America one hundred years
ago. One day in 1909 in London, England, an American publisher, William
D. Boyce, lost his way in a dense fog. He Stopped under a street lamp
and tried to figure out where he was. A boy approached him and asked if
he could be of help. "You certainly can," said Boyce. He told the boy
that he wanted to find a certain business office in the center of the
city.
"I'll take you there," said the boy. When
they got to the destination, Mr. Boyce reached into his pocket for a
tip. But the boy stopped him. "No thank you, sir. I am a Scout. I
won't take anything for helping."
"A Scout? And what might that be?" asked
Boyce. The boy told the American about himself and his brother Scouts.
Boyce became very interested. After finishing his errand, he had the
boy take him to the British Scouting office.
At the office, Boyce met Lord Robert
Baden-Powell, the famous British general who had founded the Scouting
movement in Great Britain. Boyce was so impressed with what he learned
that he decided to bring Scouting home with him.
On February 8, 1910, Boyce and a group of
business, civic and youth leaders founded the Boy Scouts of America.
From that day forth, Scouts have celebrated February 8 as the birthday
of Scouting in the United States. Since then, more than 110 million
Americans have been boy scouts, including Gerald Ford, the only U.S.
President who earned the rank of Eagle Scout.
